April 13, 2006 Week Without Walls Steering Committee Report
Dear Parents As you may know, the WWW Steering Committee charge is to make recommendations to the Administration regarding the future of our Week Without Walls Program. Our Steering Committee is comprised of Students, Faculty, Parents, a Board Member, and Administration. Faculty representatives shared fully with the group concerns expressed at the April Faculty meeting. The Committee's recommendations reflect attention to the major areas of concern expressed by faculty, and other community members. Below is the recommendation and set of actions that need to be accomplished by June 1st if the program is to run next year. Recommendation to the Administration: The CAC WWW Trips Program be pursued for 2006/2007, and the trips go ahead next year if the following set of actions are completed by June 1st. Action #1 Full educational itineraries are in place for 29 trips. Current Status:
Due to the problems associated with this year’s WWW, some Faculty members have lost trust. Many faculty members are not willing to travel with students outside of Cairo, because of the enormous responsibility, and the fear that students cannot be counted on to follow the rules and respect safety standards. At the same time, if the program goes ahead, we may be able to rebuild trust, and revitalize the learning that can take place on these trips. If the program is run next year, we will have reduced Out-of-Country options, however, we will still have a strong program if excellent local trips are developed by community members. Students and parents can play a part by working on proposals to be submitted to the Steering Committee. When we return from Spring Break we will share details about proposing well- developed trips. This spring, we will need ten (10) valuable, educational trips proposed by students, faculty and/or community members and accepted by the Steering Committee and Administration. Action #2 Administrative Support for the program will be strengthened. Developing a trips program takes a lot of work and commitment from our Professional Staff. Countless hours are spent developing tight itineraries, accurate budgets, securing visas and working with outside travel agents and companies. The committee recommends that a more effective support system be in place before the 2006/2007 school year. Action# 3 A Student Educational Program on Trip Ideals and outcomes will be developed for 2006/2007. We realize that this program can be strengthened by more education on the values and learning outcomes that are derived from experiential learning. Questions we might explore include:
There are some values at the heart of this program, and there is an opportunity to learn much more than academic subjects during Week Without Walls. The Educational Program will be aimed at students understanding the values at the heart of our program and the opportunities we have for individual and collective growth during this special week of unusual learning. Action #4 Travel Eligibility will be discussed and specific criteria may be put into place before 2006/2007. Consideration for values (the idea of global and local responsibility, that travel is a privilege, etc.) the committee will consider developing travel criteria. If Travel criteria is added to the program, students who do not meet good standards of behavior will be ineligible to travel. To support a safe and effective program, the current consequences for inappropriate behaviors will continue to apply. Action #5 The WWW Program will adopt a new title and logo, to reflect the program’s main ideals and learning outcomes-- global-mindedness, local and international service and citizenship. There will be more information coming forward about generating this new program title and logo, but students will play a major role in its development. Final Comments For the Program to run next year with the Steering Committee’s seal of approval, these 5 actions need to be completed by June 1st. After Spring break our Steering Committee will present the specific ways that community members can play a part. Stay tuned and get ready. We need you.
