April 13, 2006 Student-led Conferences
The faculty and administration of the Middle School extends a warm thank you to all the parents and students who participated in our first student-led conferences. This was a great success and we believe the time and energy that went into preparing them was well worth it. We thank parents for taking the time to complete the surveys. The results have been posted on our web site under the Student-led Conference link. As always, you are welcome to contact any teacher to make an appointment should there be any concerns with your child's progress.

We will honor these athletes at our final recognition assembly in June. HS Battle of the Bands - April 28The Battle of the Bands is a high school event and the intended
audience is high school students. This year the Junior Class
is extending an invitation to those 8th graders who wish
to attend this event. Sixth and seventh grade students who
are the younger siblings of HS performers may attend the
event ONLY if they are accompanied by their parents. Modern Standard Arabic after school program for Grade 6 studentsThe after school language program (currently open to Elementary School students) will be extended to include grade 6 students (native speakers). This will enable these students to continue learning Arabic at a level that is not offered/available to Grade 6 students in the regular school schedule. However, once in grade 7 and/or 8, all students will have access to all levels beyond Arabic B. It is understood that parents will pay the cost of $650 for the year 2006-2007 if they choose this option. The registration for this program will take place after May 20, 2006. Ms. Ashnadelle Mortagy, program coordinator, will notify parents of those current Grade 5 students recommended for higher level Arabic and all pertinent information will be sent home. The program will run if we have enough students to open a section. We look forward to working with you on this program which will give our ms students the opportunity to pursue their native language study under our academic auspices even though the program is offered after school. Springtime, Poetry, and a word of warning…Poetry is wonderful any time of year, but seems to fit the spring season especially well. Students at all grade levels in the Middle School will be working on poetry units, with a variety of intensity and emphasis, throughout the season. As parents, we hope you have the opportunity to enjoy your student's work with words. We also hope you are able to gently warn your child of an ongoing scam related to poetry writing now "out there" on the Internet. When your child logs on to an opportunistic "poetry" site, he or she will be encouraged to submit a poem for a "contest". Within a week or two of submitting the poem, your child will be notified that he/she has been chosen as a winner, and for only $xx.00, he/she can have a copy of the poetry anthology for which his/her work has been selected. Of course, you and your child would love to see the published poem, and so $xx.00 is sent off to the source. You may receive the anthology or you may not - usually the copy received has a production cost of 1/100th of the price your child paid for the book. There are many legitimate poetry contests and publishing arenas available to your child. Many of the pieces written in our Middle School are high quality, publishable works. We hope you will encourage and support your child's interest in seeing his/her work published - we certainly will encourage all students to place their work in reputable publications. But there are sites out there preying on children's publishing dreams, and we hope your child can avoid being a victim. Thank you for your help with this problem. Progress ReportsJust a reminder to parents that fourth quarter progress reports will be posted on Edline by 3:00pm on May 4. Satisfaction SurveysMay 7-11 is the week identified for parents, students, faculty, and staff to complete a Zoomerang "satisfaction survey" about CAC. Both Middle and High School students will take the Zoomerang survey in their respective middle or high school labs during that week. Surveys should take maximum 15 minutes to complete. Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback. Reminder to ParentsIf you need to withdraw your child from school during school hours for any reason, please try to make direct arrangements with your child and send a note with them in the morning before they leave for school. This is in preference to interrupting classes to inform students that they are to meet their parents for an appointment. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation to this matter. World Language TestingWorld Language Testing If you are the parent of a current 6th or 7th grader and your child is not currently taking a language at CAC but wants to start French, Spanish or Arabic next year, please contact your child's guidance counselor to make arrangements for placement testing. This will ensure that your child is correctly placed and their schedule for next year is completed. All testing needs to take place by the end of May, 2006. CAT MembersIf you are interested in applying for the Middle School CAT team membership for 2006-07 school year please remember to fill out an application, available at the middle school office or email Annelies (ahoogland@cacegypt.org). The deadline to submit applications is May 3. There are two openings for grade six parents and two for grade eight. THREE CHEERS
Three Cheers to ESL students for reading stories to the Elementary School students.
Guidance CornerThe Mediterranean Center for Sustainable Development in Beni Suef will be having summer programs for kids 12-15 years of age. If you're interested, stop by for a copy of the information. 5th Grade students will participate in a two-day orientation to middle school next month. The afternoons of May 3 and May 4 will provide students with time to meet their prospective core teachers, counselors and the administration, as well as to learn about middle school in general. In addition, students will have the opportunity to visit and participate in exploratory classes, giving them a small "taste" of the excitement of middle school explorations. Lastly, students will receive the Program of Studies and the explorations selection card on the 4th. The completed card, with both student and parent signature, will be due back to the student's classroom teacher no later than May 8th.
